A simple title for a complex story of one of Germany’s best known brands told by prolific motorcycle author Mick walker. This soft-bound book was the second in the Redline Books Enthusiasts Series and maintains the same high standard. Liberally illustrated with both period black and white as well as modern colour plates, throughout the 145 pages, it starts with DKW the original company. During the 1920’s this was the largest motorcycle manufacturer in the world as was MZ in the late fifties and sixties. As you read through, you realise, if you did not before, that this company in all its guises was responsible for leading the way in two-stroke technology. Walter Kaaden is of course regarded as a genius and the defection of Ernst Degner to Suzuki is one of the greatest defections in history in general. The knowledge he gave to Suzuki enabled to Japanese to become the force in racing that they are today. The utilitarian DKW RT 125 became of course the BSA Bantam and the small Harley Davidson Hummer, the Yamaha YA1, not mention a Moto Morini and a Moska in Russia! As you would expect there is large section on the utilitarian two-strokes that formed the basis of many a persons ride to work transport. The book covers right the way up to the MZ Skorpion, although does not cover the last of the bikes the 1000S twin as it was published in 2004. It has often been said that MZ owners and riders are a special band of motorcyclists, with a great passion for their marquee and by the end of this excellent book you begin to understand why. Despite MZ’s fascinating history there are actually few English books on what is arguably one of the world’s most influential brands that sadly, despite recent moves is now defunct. This is an excellent book written by Walker in his usual no-nonsense informative style that should be read by all. Despite is top quality, like its subject which had a reputation built upon ’value for money’ this book is very much that at a very modest £17.95.
